The CAMP Fellowship, which started in Dallas, TX, is a competitive opportunity and paid program focused on deepening community members’ understanding of education politics, while equipping participants with the necessary skills to support elected officials and candidates seeking office. Fellows will gain exposure to leaders of nonprofits, elected officials, media, candidates, and community organizers with decades of experience in politics and education related activities.
Electing and supporting leaders focused on making decisions with the best interests of public school kids in mind and supporting students in the classroom is not a want...it is a need. Since the Fellowship’s creation in 2016, candidates supported by the CAMP Fellows who have been elected to the school board have driven measurable gains for student achievement via policy decisions and community leadership. Dallas, for example, has seen progress in electing board members committed to the success and progress of our students in DISD. Due to our work, voters within Dallas ISD boundaries are more informed and have been and mobilized to support quality leaders during and after the election cycle.
Tangible results include passing and implementing the nation’s most comprehensive teacher and principal evaluation system, the creation of the Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) schools, and record Pre-K enrollment and gains. Continued success depends on strong leadership and governance.
In the inaugural year, the CAMP Fellows were responsible for putting in 3,000 hours directly building relationships with voters and turning them out to vote for the endorsed candidate. That directly translated to a 35% increase in voter turnout from the previous year, more than 2,700 additional votes, and more than 900 first time voters coming to vote that hadn’t participated in previous elections.
In the second year, the CAMP Fellows built upon the success of the previous cohort, knocking over 19,000 doors and having over 5,000 conversations with voters on behalf of the endorsed candidate. Their active engagement with voters in the district contributed to a resounding +20 point victory over a three-term incumbent.
In the third year, the CAMP Fellowship knocked over 20,000 doors and made over 10,000 phone calls to voters. The fellows were successful in supporting 3 out of 3 school board races, making CAMP the most successful fellowship focused on education politics in Texas.
